Chemical Engineering Safety Rule is an integral part of US Environmental Protection Agency or EPA. It was established to make the manufacturing and transportation of the chemical materials as safe as possible. It contains numerous other categories, which include rule on environmental protection, rule on handling and storage of hazardous drugs, rule on recycling of hazardous waste, and rule on prevention and emergency response. This agency was formed by executive order of the president in 1970. Its main goal is to protect the public from the adverse effects of chemical products.

 

The first thing that is required in the safety rule is to define what a chemical is. These are produced by chemical processes. Therefore, the terms of the rule include ‘applicable’ and ‘user’.

 

An important feature of the safety rules is the labeling of dangerous drugs. A warning symbol containing a red arrow must be used to indicate the classes that contain dangerous agents. Similarly, the class symbols for each chemical that has been marked must be conspicuous and easy to find. If these class symbols are not used, it will be assumed that there are no significant risks from the product.

The chemical workers must be provided with the right personal protective equipment as per the safety guidelines. They must ensure that they use these while handling the chemicals. The chemical engineering safety rule does not specify the type of clothing to be worn. However, the GHS manual states that it should be clean and comfortable. The manufacturers of these safety products must ensure that they produce them according to the required standards. These products can be provided by the government as well. However, the manufacturer should ensure that the quality is not compromised. The manufacturers should make sure that these products are not substandard. All the three safety rules are mandatory and the manufacturers should not breach any of these.

 

The fourth safety rule is the cleanliness of the work area. Chemical engineers are also required to keep the work area clean and safe. The space they work in must be free from toxic gases, aerosols, dust, dirt and debris. All the materials that the engineer uses must be clean and must not contain any leakage. They must wear respirators to protect their lungs from chemical fumes. The entire process of chemical engineering needs to be safe and hygienic.

 

Another rule is that the surroundings of the work place must be kept free from dust and must not be contaminated with the dust. The surroundings can be cleared periodically by the use of vacuum cleaners. The engineer can attend to emergency concerns only when the situation has been completely cleared. Cleanliness and hygiene play an important role in the success of every chemical procedure. All the instruments and equipment used in the workplace must be kept clean and hygienic.

 

Another rule of safety is that the people who handle the chemical substances must wear suitable protective clothing. The chemical substances may cause serious diseases like skin rashes and eyes poisoning. The people who work in close proximity of these substances must wear masks to protect their eyes and skin from the harmful effects of these chemicals. The clothes worn by the people have to be resistant to these effects of the chemicals. All the equipments used by the engineer must be cleaned and maintained to prevent the occurrence of serious problems.

 

The work of the chemical engineers in this field are very important. They have to develop new methods and better designs for better performance. They must ensure that the manufacturing units are using the latest equipment and devices to minimize the effect of hazards. Chemical engineering has contributed largely for the mankind. It is a dynamic field which is growing with time. This is why professionals who possess this degree are in high demand all over the world.
